August 2021 Newsletter
President's Report

Greetings IFMA members,
We have had some great in-person meetings in July and August at our traditional meeting place, Biaggi’s.
We appreciate everyone that has come out to support these events. Our Programs team put together some top-knotch speakers for our July and August luncheons with excellent information on Electrical System Maintenance and Fire Protection Inspections, respectively.
I want to thank ABM for sponsoring our July luncheon. We appreciate the support of our events and allowing us to bring these meetings and topics to our members.
Our annual golf tournament was held in conjunction with IREM and BOMA on August 20th at the Antler Creek Gold Course. This year IFMA chose to sponsor Street Petz with the proceeds from our portion of the golf tournament. Once the event is wrapped up, we will look to host Street Petz at a luncheon and learn more about their organization. Stay tuned for more information.
September 29th is IFMA Advocacy Day. Check out the IFMA National website and learn more about how IFMA and IFMA members interact with the government on policies and laws that effect the FM profession.
On October 26th, IFMA World Workplace is back in person in Kissimmee Florida. This is IFMA’s signature event where educational sessions will inform Facility Managers, and the Expo and other events allow for great networking opportunities. It is not too late to register for this great event.
Our chapter is committed to providing timely educational sessions and collaboration between professionals. I invite you to stay informed with our monthly newsletters and look forward to seeing everyone in person at our August monthly luncheon.

Facilities Management - GE Johnson Special Projects
What has been your most memorable or rewarding experience in Facilities?
There have been many but probably what I find most rewarding about my job is helping employees learn new skills and advance their careers.
What advice would you give to someone just starting a career in Facilities?
Be flexible! Every day in facilities is filled with change, emergencies, different personalities and unexpected situations. Learning to embrace and adapt to change will make you an invaluable employee and will reduce your stress and conflicts.
Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought was bad but it turned out to be for the best?
Yes. My last company made the decision to outsource our facilities group (including me) to an onsite property management company. For a couple of years prior to this, I had been considering a change but this pushed me to find a new job and leave the company. My job today, working for GE Johnson as the Operations Manager for our Facilities Group has a lot of the same work I was doing previously but I’ve also learned many new things. One of the things I love most is having the responsibility for essentially running a business, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. Plus, I get to work with a variety of clients at many different locations in many different industries. It’s more interesting to me, there is far less bureaucracy and I can honestly say I love my job!
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this?
I would live in Alaska off the grid and surviving would be my career.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
If I only knew then, what I know now…..

AUGUST LUNCHEON
Here’s what you missed…
Rick Miller with Frontier Fire Protection gave us an outstanding presentation about fire protection system inspections and maintenance at our luncheon this month.

We learned:
Who makes me get these inspections?
What is NFPA?
Where can I look this information up?
When do I need to have my systems inspected?
Do fire systems need preventative maintenance?
Our luncheons also have great food!

Keep an eye out for more information on next month’s luncheon.
Be sure to register early so you don’t miss out!
